Give it personality!
I’m talking to one of my friends right now and he’s really bummed out that he might not be getting into his architecture program this year. :[ His confidence was completely destroyed due to some criticism for his portfolio. I keep thinking, man, what does this remind me of? Oh yeah, my uncle from my quote above. The one who said I wouldn’t go far from making graphics or a website? O rly now? Well, for your information, I made a decent amount of money back in November 2006. I bought a $95 Calvin Klein puffer jacket and I still have enough for LOTS of stuff! 
You see, I’m not the type of person that just gives up. I often tell people that I’m not hardworking at all, I just refuse to quit. I guess I’m hardworking at not being a quitter! That’s my mindset and it’s never changed. Criticism? Shooting me down? Fuck you! I’ll use that as motivation to prove you wrong. My uncle never apologized and to be honest, I don’t need an apology, but I would like him to stfu.
With my friend, I gave him a talk to motivate him. There’s so many possibilities you can do with your portfolio, there’s no restrictions at all in my opinion. Take a picture in different angles, zoom in on details, draw it, whatever! Write a note to show the judges your intentions, what you see through your eyes.. unlimited possibilities! I agreed to help him with creativity and how he can build his portfolio to be stronger. Even if he doesn’t get in this year, he’ll have a lot of works in his portfolio and within that year, he’ll have tons more to add onto it, where he can choose what would be a good addition. Adding notes, a letter of your goals and motivations, give it personality! Let them see you through your art! What’s your style?
I believe it’s really how you choose to look at it. Change your attitude, work harder, and if you don’t get in to whatever, at least you know you gave it your best. Give everything you’re trying for your all. And don’t knock yourself down when things don’t go your way. Use that as motivation. The best feeling is to prove someone wrong.
